How to Check If a University Is Accredited (Step by Step)

By Editorial Desk Published 4 views

Ten minutes and two official databases are usually enough. A practical, step-by-step routine for checking any institution before you pay, enrol or hire.

The distinction between an earned degree and an honorary one matters here as well. An honorary doctorate is conferred by a legitimate institution to recognise public service, artistic achievement or philanthropy; it is not an academic qualification, and reputable recipients say so explicitly. Sellers of fake credentials deliberately blur this line, marketing honorary doctorates as if they were earned qualifications carrying professional standing. They are not.

Most mills follow a familiar commercial playbook. Customers choose a degree and major from a price list, submit a résumé or a short life-experience essay, and receive the diploma within days. Tiered packages add transcripts, honour cords, letters of recommendation and even verification hotlines staffed by employees who will confirm the award to anyone who calls. The entire transaction can be completed without a single lecture, examination or peer-reviewed assignment.

The internet changed the scale of the problem. Where a mill once needed print advertisements and a post-office box, a convincing website can now be assembled in an afternoon. Search results, social media and paid placements put fake universities beside genuine ones, and automation lets a single operator run dozens of campuses at once. Consumer awareness has had to scale just as quickly.

Reporting channels exist and they do work. Suspicious institutions can be reported to state licensing authorities, national education ministries, consumer-protection agencies and the platforms that host their advertising. Documentation matters: save the website, the payment receipts and all correspondence. Several long-running operations have been shut down because a handful of consumers and one journalist kept meticulous records.

Every verification habit makes the next fake credential worthless. Start with the registrar, check the accreditor against official lists, and let the paperwork prove itself before money changes hands.
